Controlling Carpenter Ants

First and Foremost

Any successful Carpenter Ant program starts with a thorough inspection of the structure both inside and outside.  Carpenter Ant nesting sites are very difficult to locate, but it is essential that the nest be found for proper control.  When winged reproductive Carpenter Ants are emerging inside the structure this  indicates a nest exists within the home.  Reproduction ants mainly swarm in the spring.

What to Look For

C-ant damage   Our technicians will be looking for scent trails, sawdust, branches that hang on or over the structure, and also large concentration of ants in one location.  These are indications of a possible nesting site. In some cases the nest may not be located outside of the structure.  In some cases tree stumps or a rotten fence will be the source of the problem and rare cases the problem could be associated with neighboring property.  These are things that a trained professional will notice during their inspection and recommend the appropriate type of service.

Habits

Carpenter Ants are omnivorous and will eat almost anything ranging from various plants, honey, grease and any kind of meat. Carpenter Ants do not eat wood because their digestive system cannot digest wood.  Carpenter Ants are very active at night and will forage aggressively for food during the evening hours.   Carpenter Ants have been known to forage up 100’ for a food source. Carpenter Ants as a rule will nest in moist wood, but on rare occasions will nest in foam insulation and hollow doors.

Control

The best way to control Carpenter Ants is to eliminate their nesting source.  Keeping property free from debris is critical such as, repairing damaged wood, removing decaying stumps and dead trees. Also repairing leaks in roof, around windows and under doors will prevent wood from decaying.

Why Are Carpenter Ants Seen In The Winter Inside?

Carpenter Ants Everywhere
When Carpenter Ants are located inside your home during the winter months it is a good indication of a nesting site within the structure. Carpenter Ants will be seen randomly in all most any room throughout your home. Finding the nest this time of the year is very difficult, but critical for control. Carpenter Ants have been dormant since the fall and have just starting to forage around your home looking for a food source.

How is it possible for Carpenter Ants to start foraging now?
Even though we live in Western New York with sub-zero temperatures, the heat from the sun beating on home or the heat from a fireplace is enough heat to get the ants moving. This tricks the Carpenter Ants into believing it is spring.

Where could the nest be?
The nests are often located in window sills, door frames or anywhere else Carpenter Ants can find moist wood. Although it is still possible for Carpenter Ants nest in other areas such as, hollow door and foam insulation.
